What Are The Natural Treatments for IBS?

Posted by Troy Stevens On July - 17 - 2009

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (or IBS) is a condition which millions of people all over the world live with. It’s not a life threatening illness, though it is extremely unpleasant. The intensity of the symptoms vary from one individual to another like many other diseases; the most effective treatments for this condition also vary depending on the patient.

The degree of the symptoms vary from person to person, ranging from very mild to nearly debilitating. The treatments which can effectively alleviate or cure the condition also vary from one individual to the next. This is because IBS is a term which refers to the symptoms rather than the cause, which may be any of several different factors.

One thing which is common to all cases of IBS is that the muscles of the digestive system are affected and essentially “misfire”, causing a disruption in the normal function of the GI tract. When these muscles fail to keep food moving through the system, cramps, stomach pain and other IBS symptoms result. This can be compared to what happens when a conveyor belt malfunctions in a production facility. At some points, the sufferer may vacate very rapidly and at others, serious backups can occur. This muscular malfunction leads to pain, bloating and flatulence, diarrhea, constipation and other unpleasant problems.

The pain, discomfort and unpredictability of irritable bowel syndrome make it one of the most difficult conditions to live with. It’s also notoriously difficult to treat, since the symptoms collectively referred to as IBS may have many different causes. It’s not caused by a virus, bacteria or other pathogenic organisms in most cases, so there’s no single easy diagnosis or cure.

One of the key problems with treating it is that people don’t seem to understand that they need to take care of themselves first. One of the main causes of IBS is a lack of fiber in the body. Fiber and whole grains can help keep the digestive system moving as well as all the vitamins and minerals your mother always told you to take. I’m not saying fiber is the cure all but having adequate fiber can’t hurt, and in some cases eases the problem.

Getting the vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients your body needs from a healthy diet with plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables can go a long way towards reducing the severity of the symptoms and in some, can even cure irritable bowel syndrome. Unfortunately, diet alone isn’t always enough to cure IBS, though it can make the symptoms much less severe so it can be easier to handle. Regular exercise is another important natural treatment for IBS.

If you suffer from IBS, diet and exercise can be a potent combination in battling this extremely uncomfortable condition. However, there is no guarantee that diet and exercise will completely cure irritable bowel syndrome. These methods work for many and should be used as a first step before resorting to prescription medication or invasive surgical treatments. Along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, you may also want to try a colon cleanser; be warned though, this may be more uncomfortable than the condition itself!

There are a few natural treatment options available to people suffering from IBS. If diet and exercise don’t eliminate your symptoms, consult your physician and ask what they recommend as the next step to take. Natural treatments should always be tried first, but if you have a serious condition, your doctor is there for a reason – your health is important, so seek their advice when needed.
