The Second Law of Personal Energy – The Energy Cycle

Posted by Stacey Watkins On November - 30 - 2009

Life, like energy has a cycle. The trick is to identify these rhythms and maximize them if you want to have sustainable energy. Let me explain.

Everyday we expend energy to get some form of work done. We need to work, then we need to refuel. Most of us have had the experience where for one reason or another we skipped lunch. We went against the cycle, and likely we felt the consequences of that by becoming irritable, lethargic, and mentally unclear.

All of us can stand to get a little better at listening to our bodies. It knows what it needs but often we try to act like we know better.

Let me give you a specific example. Everyone is familiar with the Circadian rhythm, the biological rhythm that controls sleep and wake. If you are like the average person, this rhythm is about 16 hours of wake to 8 hours of sleep.

But did you know that we have another rhythm called our Ultradian rhythm which happens more than just once a day. This occurs about every 90 to 120 minutes or so. You may notice that when you have been working at something for about 90 minutes you start to yawn, or your concentration becomes tough to maintain. You may get a little thirsty or feel a bit more tiredness setting in. The Ultradian rhythm is responsible for this feeling. This is a signal that your body needs a break.

What you should do is get up and take a 15 minute break. Physically get up out of your chair and go get a drink of water and completely disconnect from what you were doing. You are also advised to get a little something to eat, something light like a fruit or a vegetable (carrots, celery, tomatoes make great snacks for this type of break).

What is revealing considering the energy levels of most people is that we as a society have trained ourselves to do the exact opposite of what our body is telling us to do. If we don’t’ try to work right through the break time, we go to the break room and get coffee and a donut. We go to the vending machine and grab a soda or a bag of chips. Or worst of all, we get an energy drink and think that is somehow going to give us the charge we need. Wrong. As soon as that sugar/caffeine rush is over, we are headed for a very deep energy valley where we will be more tired than we were before. The energy consequences are monumental.

A lot has already been written on caffeine and sugar so I won’t go into it here, but as you well know, this type of behavior is a recipe for disaster when it comes to feeling full of energy and avoiding tiredness.

In conclusion we all would do better to become more mindful of both our Circadian rhythm as well as our Ultradian rhythm. Both have a purpose. Here are some actionable suggestions to get you on your way to higher energy: buy a refillable water bottle, take some light and healthy snacks to work with you, and set the timer on your computer, cell phone, or watch to remind you to take a break every 90-120 minutes. These are very easy steps to get you on the road to increasing your energy levels.
